NAO Robot started to demonstrate self-awareness

Technology is taking a big leap of advancement in every sector of industry today. Artificial intelligence in particular has taken a new turn with the NAO robot.  Programmed at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute by Professor Selmer Bringsjord, the robots are able to detec and attract human attention. They can even give responses which is utterly awesome. Some may call it "self awarness...

For so long, human intelligence has greatly relied on human ability to detect and make judgement. It has been faulty and that is understandable because it goes without saying that human beings are never perfect. It is for this reason that scientists have taken the toll to research for a more perfect and advanced intelligence. It has not been a smooth ride for the scientists in their bid to achieve perfection. Over the years, scientists have developed intelligent systems but they have been far away from attaining their dream. The software developed for the NAO robot is the one more sttep to attaining perfection. But what is the secret behind this success?

Well, building a robot is a (relatively) simple task. It is that simple that a teenagers can build a robot as a high school science project. Yes, it is that simple. However, impacting knowledge on a robot is an unimaginable endeavour. Most people including me only believe that life and Intelligence is only given by a supreme being (God).

The secret behind Prof. Bringsjord's success lay behind the software installed on them. We are still few generations (some may say iterations) from a true AI. However, the software developed for this research shows that artificial intelligence in a specific domain can be achieved if properly programmed.

In a recent experiment carried out at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the results were over the top. Three NAO robots were used in the experiment with an aim of finding out the extent of self awareness and consciousness in the three robots. Two of the robots were programmed to be in a sleep mode. They wеrе givеn a “dumping pill” which is basically switching the button on their heads. The aim of these experiments was to find out if the two robots could realise that they were put in a sleep mode by force. The other robot was alive and responded well to the questions. Later, the two robots were able to identify the difference quite well. This was a big revelation for the artificial intelligence sector. Well, there are many aspects to artificial intelligence robots but the NAO robots have added a new element of consciousness that was not there before. All this thanks to the new software used. It’s undoubtedly revolutionary.
