NASA Curiosity Rover Build (RobotLAB) — RobotLAB (integrator build)
Overview

What is the NASA Curiosity Rover Build (RobotLAB)?

The NASA Curiosity Rover Build is a RobotLAB-assembled research rover inspired by NASA's Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover. It was designed as a hands-on teaching platform for the mechanical, control, and perception concepts that make a real rocker-bogie mobility system work. The build combined an aluminum extrusion chassis, six-wheel rocker-bogie suspension with off-road tires, and an LED matrix display for visual telemetry, alongside interchangeable manipulator arms for hands-on experimentation.

Status: currently out of stock. This product page is preserved for reference and continuity for the schools and teams that deployed the earlier build. Call 1-87-RobotLAB to discuss availability, spare parts for existing units, or a comparable current-generation research rover.

For an active, purchasable research rover with similar SLAM, autonomy, and payload capability, RobotLAB recommends the Unitree Go1 Edu with 3D LiDAR (research-grade quadruped with Jetson Xavier NX and 3D LiDAR) or the Unitree Go2 EDU (current-generation programmable quadruped). Contact RobotLAB and our team can match a live platform to your teaching or research goals.

How it works

NASA Curiosity Rover Build (RobotLAB) in detail

Hands-on rover mechanics for education

The build was assembled so students could see and touch how a real rocker-bogie mobility system distributes load across six independently articulating wheels, keeping all six on the ground on uneven terrain. Learners could compare the geometry to NASA's real Curiosity while remaining safe to operate in a classroom or lab environment.

Programmable control and telemetry

The integrated LED matrix display and open control interface were used to teach basic telemetry, state visualization, and rover command sequencing. Students could program simple mission sequences and see them play back live on the rover.

Discontinued / preserved for reference

This product is currently out of stock. RobotLAB preserves the page for teams still operating deployed units and for schools researching the platform. Call 1-87-RobotLAB for parts, service, or a recommended current-generation alternative such as the Unitree Go1 Edu with 3D LiDAR or the Unitree Go2 EDU.

Questions & answers

About the NASA Curiosity Rover Build (RobotLAB).

  1. Is this rover currently for sale?

No, the NASA Curiosity Rover Build is currently out of stock. The page is preserved so schools with deployed units can find documentation, and so buyers researching this platform can see the historical build. For an active, purchasable research rover, call 1-87-RobotLAB and our team can recommend the Unitree Go1 Edu with 3D LiDAR or the Unitree Go2 EDU as current-generation alternatives.

  2. What was in the original build?

The build combined a six-wheel rocker-bogie chassis inspired by NASA's Curiosity rover, off-road tires for indoor and light outdoor use, an integrated LED matrix display for telemetry visualization, and interchangeable manipulator arms for hands-on experimentation. RobotLAB assembled the units and shipped them with instructional documentation. Call 1-87-RobotLAB if you have a deployed unit and need spare parts.

  3. How long does it run on a charge, and how long to recharge?

The standard battery is a 24V 30Ah pack that gives roughly 2.5 hours of runtime, charging in about 3.5 hours; an upgraded 24V 60Ah pack roughly doubles endurance with a ~7-hour charge. RobotLAB's product listing cites up to ~8 hours of light-duty use depending on payload and terrain. Actual runtime varies with load and speed — call 1-87-RobotLAB to match a battery option to your use.

  4. Can I still get spare parts for a unit I already own?

Yes, within limits. It is a 4WD all-terrain platform with independent double-wishbone suspension, 135mm of ground clearance, the ability to climb 30-degree slopes, and to surmount obstacles up to 150mm. The standard unit is rated IP22 and operates from 0 to 40 degrees C; higher IP44/IP64 protection is available as an upgrade for wetter conditions. Call 1-87-RobotLAB to confirm the right configuration for your environment.

  5. Do I have to buy it, or can I subscribe?

This build is out of stock, so retail pricing is not published. RobotLAB does not currently accept new orders for the NASA Curiosity Rover Build. If you have a deployed unit or want a current-generation research rover, call 1-87-RobotLAB and our team can advise.

  6. What support and training does RobotLAB provide?

As a full-service integrator, RobotLAB provides U.S.-based deployment assistance, training, and ongoing support — not just a drop-shipped box. We help with network setup, initial ROS configuration, and keeping a multi-unit fleet running across a semester or research program. Reach our team at 1-87-RobotLAB.
